As promised, an update....

The power of sing-alongs

Imagine this situation:
You are chatting with a couple of friends and suddenly there was this unnatural silence. Everyone just ran out of things to say. Then one of you start humming a tune and slowly, everyone starts to join in in the singing.

If you would recall film Armageddon, the team leaving for space then broke out in a impromtu rendition of "Leaving on a jet plane" that was extremely fitting to the occasion. That is an occasion where music does more good than words.

In the past week, been experiencing a few sing-alongs, the more memorable ones would include the class teachers' day present for our CT and the batch song sung twice for Mrs Koh. I was pleasantly surprised by the former, coz it was just something that i tot my class would never do, more so when their choice of song was guang liang's tong2 hua4. Perhaps i do not knoe the class as well as i think after all. So we sang the song in this tutorial room in block B which was empty by then, luckily i would say. lol, i won't and shouldn't comment on pitching and stuff, but i would say that the spirit is there lar. I believed in fairytales when i sang tht and i think that the class did as well, at least i hope so, and so hopefully our CT can see that as well.

The second sing-along i mentioned was the batch song for Mrs Koh during Teachers' Day Eve. After meeting up with most of the teachers, Mrs Koh called for the batch to assemble at the atrium. She then, like a great leader, took centre stage and gave a rousing speech, to tell us that she's leaving RI at the end of the year. Then she requested for the singing of the batch song. Close to 100 ppl was at the atrium then i think, and we formed a circle and started singing the batch song at the top of our voices.
"Teach us well, Teach us how to care,
Give us love, love that we can share.
As we walk hand in hand in the light of the rising sun,
We are the young."

As each note of the song reasonates through the atrium, it tugs at each and every of our heartstrings. The batch spirit was back, with nostalgia this time. Flashblacks started running through my head, the times in class, in CO...the more memorable ones like grad ceremony and grad night. I looked to the side, i did not knoe the person beside me, but what i do knoe is tht, he's been touched, moved by the song as well as he sings at the top of his voice, not caring if he was off-tune. I looked across to Mrs Koh, her face was filled with tears, but in between sobs, she still joins us in singing. I felt tears weeling up in the eyes, but they never materialised on the face. "You can cry, but you can't let your tears fall" the unfortunate truth of the environment we are in now.

Songs or music in general seeks to move the audience. It does not take a musician to appreciate music, it just takes someone with the ability to feel and be true to his/her emotions. The meaning of music is only lost when one become apathetic to music or rather, apathetic to how u feel.......
